Barcelona chair contextual essay + exploded

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was an influencial German architect from the early 20th century. His architecture consisted of modern styling utlising materials such as industrial steel and plate glass for definition. His furniture design reflects these characteristics and follows the simplistic forms created by the minimalistic framework. One of his most famous creations was the Barcelona chair which was a commercial success and has been in production for over 80 years.

The Barcelona chair was designed for the countrys entry for the ‘International Exposition of 1929, which was held in Barcelona, Spain. Conceived as a ceremonial seat for King Alfonso XIII of Spain, it has become one of the modern designs most famous icons. It is characterised by a smooth seamless curved frame with geometric, upholstered cushions resting ontop. The frame design was originally chrome plated steel bolted together but technological advances in seamless ground welding in the 50s saw a redesign and a change of material (stainless steel) which allowed it to be formed by a seamless piece of metal.

The original expensive pigskin used in the original chair was also re-vamped and now consists of high quality cow hide. Supporting the cushions are leather straps which are tied taughtly around the horizontal parts of the framework.
